Ilford

Up Plessey Factory

I was brought up in Chadwell Heath in the Borough of Ilford, which became part of the London Borough of Redbridge in 1964
One of the major industrial companies in Ilford was Plessey in Ley Street

It was a major manufacturer of equipment during WWII. As such it was an important target for Luftwaffe bombers (see maps below). To protect production and its workers, in November 1940, Plessey put its factory underground.

After the war, production resumed in Ley Street.

In 1966 I applied for a vacation job and was offered one winding coils.

The GPO offered me a job working in its Postal Mechanisation lab at Mount Pleasant, measuring rise times and propagation delays in its "Dolilog" high noise immunity logic boards. I decided that was more appropriate for an Undergrad in Cybernetics!!
