"Alfie" @ "White Hart"

Up

The White Hart  Hotel is now The Great House at Sonning Hotel. When I was a student at Reading University in 1966 I saw the film "Alfie" starring Michael Caine and was sure that one of the sequences was filmed in Sonning and at The White Hart hotel. 45 years later)  have taken photos and compared them with "stills" to show this was the case (see below) and submitted them to the Reel Streets website.

Below are "stills" from the 1966 film "Alfie" starring Michael Caine together with the "now" photos I took in April 2011 and submitted to the "Reel Streets" website

"In 1966 I was a student at Reading University and often visited Sonning, a village nearby. After seeing Alfie I was sure that one of the sequences was filmed in Sonning at The White Hart hotel (now The Great House Hotel)"

"The bridge is Sonning Bridge and the River is The Thames. The building on the right is  The White Hart hotel (now The Great House Hotel)"

"This shows the terrace outside the Regatta Suite, the main dining room, of The White Hart hotel in Sonning (now The Great House Hotel)"

"I believe this was filmed where the grounds of The White Hart hotel in Sonning ran down to the River Thames.  Nowadays the grounds of the hotel are separated from a public footpath by the Thames by walls and hedging but old photos show an open lawn down to the river. The Willow in the now photo might have been the one in the then photo but the metal structure in the background cannot be identified"  See 1955 photo
